la escuela de espanol

so, maybe i’m a total geek, but i love language school!

today was our first day of school. we started at 8:00 a.m. (yep, that means my brain has to be ready to learn at 8:00 :))…and end our lessons at 12:00. (with a 30 minute break at 10:30).

we each have our own private teachers. we sit at small tables facing each other and with a huge white board to my right. the board is used for alot of things, including vocab that comes up in “conversation” that i need to learn. i say “conversation”, because, let’s be honest….i’m mostly listening! ๐Ÿ™‚

today was really fun…most of what we covered was things i had learned in the past…so it was mostly review for me. but i am certain by week’s end, my head will be swimming with all sorts of new information that will confuse my english! (the last few days, i feel like i can’t even speak english! i guess that’s kind of good…maybe it means my brain is acclimating to spanish!)

after school each day, i willย meet my host family for lunch at their house at 1:15. living with a host family has been……..interesting. ๐Ÿ˜‰ my family is very kind and has shown me around the house, corrected my broken spanish and cooks for me for every meal. they are so sweet….however, that does not mean that it’s not awkward! ๐Ÿ™‚ i’m hoping after a few more days, i’ll be able to speak with them more and it won’t be so awkward. either way, it’s a great learning experience. alicia and hannah are with other homes, but we are all within about a 10 minute walk from each other and the school.

you walk everywhere here in antigua. it is a beautiful city and the walks are welcomed, not dreaded. today, when i met alisha on the corner of her street and proceeded to walk to school, i couldn’t help but feel like i was back in elementary school walking to the bus stop. except, instead of my strawberry shortcake lunchbox, i was outfitted with my handy keen bag. all that was missing was a “first day of school” outfit. too bad i can’t recreate my 5th grade “first day” outfit which consited of scottie dogs on both my black shirt and my black ankle socks—forget the fact that i wore the whole ensemble completely buttoned to the top and added the finishing touch with white moccasins. i mean, really….

i promise to post pictures very soon. i wanted to get a feel for the city before i started whipping out my camera like a total tourist. of course, i suppose i am. ๐Ÿ™‚
