warm welcomes…

friday night, our team arrived safely and “sound?”ly in guatemala city with all luggage in tact and definitely a little tired from weepy goodbyes and alot of waiting around in the airport!

when we stepped off the plane…it was a little surreal, to say the least. as we landed, i felt a little apprehensive…this is my new home…yikes!

after collecting all our luggage (praise God!) and making it through customs with no problems, we were greeted by Carol, one of the staff members of Casa de Libertad and Francisco and Carol Bendefelt, pastors at Casa de Libertad. immediately…they began to make us feel at home.

they ushered us to the cars, loaded us up and immediately took us out to a wonderful restaurant…being sure to point out items of interest along the way. after enjoying a great meal and fellowship, we headed to the orphanage, where we will be spending the next few days until our house is ready for move in.

upon arrival at the orphanage, we were given awesome welcome baskets with all sorts of snacks, several of which were a little taste of the US—-just to let us know we weren’t too far from home!

the best news on friday night? that tomorrow (saturday-today), would be a “girls day” and we “the carols” would show us around town. we were also urged to sleep in, get rest and “do not rush” getting up in the morning. ahhh…music to our ears!

and that’s exactly what happened. this morning, we slept in, enjoyed coffee and a visit with the woman who runs the orphanage carol (yes, a 3rd carol), and her daughter, carol (who picked us up). all i have to say is…YUM to guatemalan coffee! πŸ™‚

later we visited what i call the guatemalan versions of sam’s club (pricemart-first pic below) and walmart (hyper paiz-second pic below). they have everything imaginable here, and we felt very comforted to know that we will have no problems finding things we need to cook, furnish the house, etc.

then, they took us to the mall that is nearby our house/the church. it’s a really nice mall, and i found one store particularly awesome..

haha…for those who know me, you are laughing right now! πŸ™‚

then…they took us to our new house! we’re waiting on a few essential things (refrigerator/stove), and then we will hopefully get to move in! πŸ™‚ the house is AMAZING! we love the neighborhood and feel very safe there…here are some pictures:

a little park at the end of our street…

all in all…a great day of getting the feel of our new city. i think the only non-warm thing about our welcome has been the weather!!! it has been SO niceΒ to not be sweating 24/7 :).

more later…

tomorrow is church and then monday, we leave for a church retreat for a few days. keep praying for us!!! transition is going well, but definitely alot to take in!
